A Delicious Salmon dinner

So I have an absolutely amazing dish for you today. The greatest thing about this dish is how simple it is, and dare I say it? A bit healthy haha. This is a dish made up of brown rice, steamed asparagus, and grilled salmon with a garlic butter sauce.

I wanted a good, wholesome dinner for the end of my stressful finals week and I had been eating a lot of sandwiches so I decided to try my hand at making a protein-rich dish that tasted amazing. The dish will take a little while to cook due to the length of time it takes to cook brown rice, but I thoroughly enjoy brown rice over white rice nowadays, not just because of the health benefits but also for taste.

Local Food Review: The Rolling Harvest Food Truck

rolling harvest

Hello everyone, thanks for stopping by! I’ve got something a little different this time around: a review! I love sharing my own recipes and tips with you all, but I had a delightful experience at a local food truck that I just had to share.

I attend school at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois and I hate to say that there is not a whole lot of unique restaurant variation in the area. So I bet you can imagine my delight when I learned about a local food truck that promoted locally sourced products in a “farm to truck” atmosphere. Comfort food Spotlight: Stuffed Chicken

Hello all and welcome back! I once again apologize for the drought in content as I’ve been trying to finish up this very tough semester. Fret not though, I promise to have several posts this week to make up for it. One of them will even be a review for a local food truck that has amazing food!

This recipe is for my signature stuffed chicken and is the first one that I developed completely on my own. I made it for my family and friends a few times and received great reviews all around, so I thought I’d share it with you all! Continue reading “Comfort food Spotlight: Stuffed Chicken”

A Burger bonanza feat. The “Big Zach”

Hello fellow foodies and welcome back! I took a short hiatus from updating TrueGrub due to my semester workload getting a bit heavier than usual, but fret not, I’m back with a great new recipe for you!

This recipe is a twist on a burger classic that I’m sure at least most of you are familiar with. Being able to cook a burger is a good staple for any home cook to have in their arsenal, and was the first meal that I learned how to cook on my own.

There are a few unique techniques I can offer in ways to make your burger taste the best it can, but the real flavor lies in how you season the meat, the quality of meat, and the type of surface you’re cooking on. Continue reading “A Burger bonanza feat. The “Big Zach””

Comfort food Spotlight: Chicken Alfredo

20170320_200902 (1)

Hello everyone! I’d like to welcome you back to TrueGrub for my latest recipe: Chicken Alfredo! Most of my experience with cooking is related to American cuisine, but I actually worked for a number of years at an Italian restaurant, and this allowed me to pick up some tips and tricks on cooking Italian dishes.

I love the core foundation of most Italian dishes: a tomato based sauce, pasta, and some sort of protein. I’ve dabbled with many tomato based sauces such as marinara, but when I think of comfort food one sauce really comes to mind: Alfredo! Alfredo is a dairy-based sauce that incorporates melted Parmesan cheese and several spices. It is a hearty sauce and probably not the best for those watching calories haha!

There are essentially three components to bringing together Chicken Alfredo successfully: the chicken, the pasta, and of course the sauce. Cooking the protein correctly is always important to a successful dish, but I believe the sauce is what really brings out the flavor in this case. Since this does require three different components, it can be a bit tricky to time all of them correctly but have no fear! I will provide some guidelines for you to make sure all of these ingredients come together to create a wonderful dish. Continue reading “Comfort food Spotlight: Chicken Alfredo”

Sandwich Sunday, feat. The Reuben!

Hello and welcome back to TrueGrub everyone!

I want to thank everyone for browsing through all my preparatory posts. I hope you’ve got your kitchens ready, because now the recipes are going to start coming in and man they are delicious!

There will still be kitchen prep posts every so often, and the point of those are to get your kitchen as aligned as possible with my own so the recipes will be easier for you to cook. I’m not asking any of my followers to go out and purchase anything if they don’t want, but just remember these are the products I will be using. Awesome! Now that we’ve got that squared away, let’s get to the sandwich of the day: The Reuben!

The Reuben: The featured sandwich today is an interesting one. It has as much of a rich history as it does a unique taste. The Reuben’s actual creator is hotly disputed among sandwich historians, and its origin ranges from delis in New York all the way to Nebraska. Many variations of the original recipe exist and have been renamed for the ingredients used, and also for what part of the country it is from. My recipe is adapted from my dad’s with a slight variation in regards to the original. Continue reading “Sandwich Sunday, feat. The Reuben!”

Come on in, stay a while!

Hello and welcome!

This is my quaint little blog dedicated to belly-filling, home-cooked comfort food. I am by no means an expert chef, so if that’s what you’re looking for then I’m sorry to disappoint. I am a self-trained cook and that affords me a unique opportunity. All of my recipes and videos will be provided without any air of superiority. I can provide an affordable meal every week that won’t require complex cooking methods.

I am a college senior so I certainly have to watch my money, and that is why I’ve decided to design these recipes to be affordable with nearly any budget. Just because they’re affordable and easy to make doesn’t mean they’re not delicious though!

I am a big fan of cheese, bacon, ranch, and avocados so it is very likely the recipes will feature one or more of those ingredients. Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy with both your eyes and your belly!

On the surface, TrueGrub seems to merely be dedicated to affordable, delicious home-cooked meals. That is the major objective of the blog, but I have some underlying goals that should be mentioned. Continue reading “Come on in, stay a while!”
